Yanuo Shi is working on the new designs and electrochemistry of micro solid oxide fuel cell (µ-SOFC) for replacement of batteries in portable electronics. Latter devices offer the advantage of increased specific and volumetric energy densities towards state-of-the-art Li-ion based and metal air batteries for the future. Currently highest losses are at the cathode-electrolyte interfaces and electro-chemo-mechanics require attention. The cells are operated on temperature to assure sufficient diffusion kinetics on the one hand, and require also gas access from both sides through a free-standing fuel cell membrane on a Si-chip. Strong stresses evolve that can interact with point defects and carrier transport characteristics leading to changed migration and also affected association energy of the solid state cell components. Fundamental model experiments contribute to investigate the role of strain-stress on carrier transport and defects involved on smallest scale. Full ceramic electrodes are targeted to reduce the electrode-electolyte losses and overpotentials and are investigated under hydro-carbon fuels.
His general interest in development of new microfabrication routes and electrochemistry targets also the processing of nano-ionic dot structures with modifyable mixed ionic electronic conduction structures. This may be seen as acounter part to quantum electronic dots where specifically dimensionally constrained ionic transport is subjected.
